Extra Curriculum

Artsmark is Arts Council England’s flagship programme to enable schools and other organisations to evaluate, strengthen and celebrate their arts and cultural provision. It is delivered by Trinity College London and 10 regional Bridge organisations drive participation.

We are currently working towards gaining our Artsmark and already this year we have performed in the Shakespeare School’s Festival and are taking the lead in the cities first celebration of the Bard, All the World’s a Stage. As well as drama our extensive arts extracurricular time table covers a vast array of the arts: this includes the traditional such as the school choir and dance to the more contemporary, animation to photography.

Children are encouraged to participate across the school and they have the opportunity to gaining a qualification in the Arts Award Scheme.

Macbeth Produced and Performed by

St. Margaret Mary Catholic School

Theatre by the Lake

11th November 2015

Appraised by Janine Birkett

Congratulations to the cast and crew of St. Margaret Mary Catholic School on their wonderful production of Macbeth at Theatre by the Lake.

This was an accomplished and original production, and I’d like to highlight a few key elements which really stood out for me.

  • The opening was particularly strong- with the image of a battle charge, which then froze as the witches entered and performed within the tableaux of the battle. This was brilliantly effective, and drew the audience into the world of the play from the start.
  • The witches with their cloaks and masks, and creeping movements were very spooky, and set the tone of the piece very well.
  • The acting throughout was to a fantastically high standard, particularly the scene with Lady Macbeth berating her husband. Their complex understanding of this play was really impressive.
  • The whole production was technically and creatively very sophisticated, with fabulous lighting, costumes, and music. The audience was captivated from start to finish!

I’d also like to commend the cast on their fantastic knowledge of the text and story. They really understood the roles they were performing, and the characters they presented were rich and complex.

This production was atmospheric, scenic, and emotive. Huge congratulations to all the cast and crew who made it happen.

I hope to see St. Margaret Mary Catholic School in the Festival again next year.
