Reading

Developing a love of reading is of paramount importance for us at St Margaret Mary Catholic Primary School, and this starts from the moment the children start in Early Years.  Children who read regularly or are read to regularly have the opportunity to open the doors to so many different worlds! More importantly, reading will give your child the tools to become independent life-long learners.

Here at St Margaret Mary’s we achieve this together through:

  • Read Write Inc, a programme to help your child read at school
  • Encouraging children to develop a love of books by reading to them daily, at home and at school
  • Giving children access to wide range of books at school and at home.

Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. The programme is designed for children aged 4-7. However, at St Margaret Mary's we begin the programme in Nursery and continue teaching RWI to children beyond the age of 7 if they still need support in their reading.

What is Read Write Inc?

How will RWI be taught?

In EYFS and KS1, children have daily phonics sessions, using the Read Write Inc. Programme.  The children are assessed every 6-8 weeks by the RWI lead teacher and grouped with children who know the same sounds as them fluently. Small group phonics lessons are taught daily by trained staff.

Children learn sounds in school which help them to read and write. They then practise these skills through reading 'Book Bag Books' at home which are specifically pitched to both consolidate learning and provide challenge in an engaging and fun way.
